Frequently asked questions

How long is the surgery and hospitalization?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, and after leaving the recovery room, the patient stays in the ward for about 2 to 3 hours to fully regain consciousness and allow the anesthetic drugs to leave the body. After this period, the patient can perform basic personal activities, but it is recommended to have a companion for the first 24 hours after surgery.

In surgical techniques that preserve the nasal mucosa, the internal lining of the nasal cavity, the septum, and the turbinates remain intact. Therefore, no cut or bleeding tissue will be left inside the nose after surgery. The incisions made in the nostrils, columella, and nasal wings are closed with 60 to 70 fine stitches, ensuring no active bleeding site, thus eliminating the need for nasal tampons.

However, after correcting deviations in the bone and cartilage of the septum, there is a risk of blood accumulation (hematoma) between the two mucosal layers. To prevent this, in addition to absorbable sutures, thin, flexible, transparent, and small silicone splints are placed inside the nose.

Unlike tampon use, this method does not block the patient’s breathing. The internal splints are removed painlessly and without bleeding along with the external splint and surface dressings.

  1. Eat a light meal the night before surgery.
  2. Avoid complete bed rest after surgery—engage in light daily activities, as inactivity can cause swelling.
  3. Swelling and bruising around the eyes and face may start the day after surgery but will subside within a week. Swelling may be more pronounced in the first 2 to 3 months but gradually improves. If the nasal skin is thick, swelling may take longer to resolve.
  4.  Use a cold compress for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
  5. If you experience nasal congestion, clean it using saline solution and a cotton swab. If the inside of your nose feels dry, apply vitamin A ointment.
  6. Purchase 3M Micropore paper tape from medical supply stores for post-surgery care.
  7. On the first night, if you have a sore throat, consume soup, ice cream, and cold liquids. From the day after surgery, you can resume regular foods such as rice, stew, and chicken, but ensure that you eat in small bites. Consume enough salt to prevent low blood pressure.
  8. Eating pineapple and vegetables helps reduce swelling. but avoid excessive consumption.
  9. Eating chips, puffs, salty and hard foods, as well as fast food, is prohibited for one month.
  10. One month after surgery, you can start light walking, and after three months, you can do stretching exercises. Avoid bending over and lifting objects heavier than 5 kg for one month. Additionally, swimming and facial cleansing treatments are prohibited for six months.
  11. While resting, your head should not lean to the right or left, although a slight tilt is not a problem.
  12. When sleeping, one pillow under your head is sufficient.
  13. The nasal cast (splint) will remain on your nose for one week. Please do not tamper with it and keep it dry.
  14. On the seventh day (as per prior arrangement), you will visit the clinic to have the cast removed. Take a full shower 5 to 6 hours before your visit to soften the cast. On this day, your stitches will also be removed, and you will be instructed on how to apply tape to your nose.

In general, smoke disrupts the wound-healing process, prolongs recovery time, and causes congestion and inflammation. Therefore, avoid smoking cigarettes and hookah for at least 3 to 4 weeks as much as possible.

At least 6 months.

The patient can give their first opinion about the shape of their nose after six months. However, this period extends to one and a half years for fleshy noses and at least one year for bony noses due to their delicate tissue.

Swelling around the eyes may start the day after surgery and reach its peak after two days, but it will subside within a week.

Consider using
